Koshi Chimes 4-Piece Set – 4 Elements

Four tunings – one shared world of sound.

The Koshi 4 Elements Set brings together all four chimes from the original Koshi collection: Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis. Each has its own musical character, yet the four tunings were designed to work harmoniously together.

Terra – Earth has a C major tuning and provides the deepest and calmest sound character of the four.

Aqua – Water moves within pentatonic D minor. Its soft, flowing character leaves plenty of space between the notes.

Aria – Air is tuned in A minor, with a clear, light and open sound.

Ignis – Fire adds warmth, brightness and a livelier impulse with its pentatonic G major tuning.

Earth, water, air and fire are therefore more than names. Behind each element lies a distinct musical structure.

Four instruments designed to answer one another

Each Koshi contains eight hand-tuned steel rods inside a cylindrical resonator made from treated bamboo. The rods are silver-soldered to a metal base and individually tuned in the Koshi workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees.

All four instruments in the 4 Elements Collection use a 432 Hz reference together with a harmonic correction developed specifically by Koshi. The rods are adjusted so that their notes and overtones work harmoniously within each individual instrument.

The particular character of the set becomes apparent when several chimes sound together. Koshi deliberately designed Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis so that their different tunings harmonise with one another within the 4 Elements Collection.

There is no predetermined composition. Wind and movement decide which rod will sound next. Two, three or all four Koshi chimes can therefore meet in continually changing combinations.

4 Elements and Earth Symphony

The newer Earth Symphony Collection with Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean follows a different musical concept and uses a 440 Hz reference tuning.

Koshi therefore recommends combining instruments within their respective collections. 4 Elements and Earth Symphony are not intended to be played together as a single ensemble.
