Zaphir Chimes
Crystalide, Sunray, Twilight, Sufi, Blue Moon & Love Echo – Six tunings. Six sound colours. Inspired by the seasons.
Zaphir chimes are handcrafted in a French workshop in the Pyrenees. Each instrument contains eight carefully tuned steel rods arranged in a spiral inside a cylindrical resonator. Gentle movement or a passing breeze sets the rods in motion, creating ever-changing sequences of notes – sometimes clear and distinct, sometimes overlapping and lingering in the air.
The resonator is made from several thin layers of calendered cellulose. Together with the tuned steel rods, it shapes the warm, crystalline sound of Zaphir chimes. Hand-marbled finishes also give each instrument its own individual appearance.
Six Zaphir tunings – six distinct characters
The five classic Zaphir tunings are associated with the seasons and their transitions. Love Echo adds a sixth, independent tuning to the collection.
- Crystalide – Spring: bright, clear and open, with a light, uplifting sound.
- Sunray – Summer: radiant and lively, with warm, shimmering sequences of notes.
- Twilight – Autumn: soft and unhurried, with a calm, reflective character.
- Sufi – Transition and Dance: fluid and expressive, with a particularly melodic interplay of notes.
- Blue Moon – Winter: clear and mysterious, with an unusual, floating sound.
- Love Echo – Peace: an independent tuning beyond the seasonal cycle, musically associated with love, peace and connection.
