Koshi Chimes 4-Piece Set – Earth Symphony

Four landscapes – one shared space of sound. 

The Koshi Earth Symphony 4-piece set brings together all four chimes in the collection: Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean. Four distinct tunings, four European woods and four sound characters inspired by landscapes form a harmonically coherent ensemble.  

Mountain opens a broad, calm space with its E major tuning. Its resonator is made from solid walnut, giving the instrument its own distinctive material character.  

Forest is tuned in F-sharp minor. Its denser, layered sound is paired with a resonator made from solid oak. **River** moves within G-sharp minor. Its sound feels fluid and mobile, with a resonator made from solid cherry wood.

Ocean opens the collection with a pentatonic B major tuning. Its solid maple resonator accompanies a broad and spacious sound character. 

Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean do not attempt to imitate their landscapes acoustically. Instead, their names provide a point of departure for four different musical spaces.

Twelve sound rods – and four additional resonances 

Each Earth Symphony chime contains twelve hand-tuned steel rods. Four are doubled at identical frequencies. Koshi describes these additional rods as sympathetic resonators: they reinforce and prolong the resonance, contributing to the greater sonic depth of the Earth Symphony instruments. 

All four tunings use a 440 Hz reference and were developed by Koshi to work harmoniously together within the Earth Symphony Collection. 

Four individual instruments can therefore become one ensemble without following a predetermined composition. Wind and movement decide which rods will sound. Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean continually meet in new combinations – sometimes distinct and individual, sometimes overlapping and merging into a larger field of sound.

Together, the four instruments also reveal what distinguishes Earth Symphony from the original 4 Elements Collection: more sound rods, extended resonance, resonators made from solid European wood and tuning based on a 440 Hz reference. 

Hear the four tunings – individually and together 

The sound samples for Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean make the different characters of the four Earth Symphony instruments immediately audible: the spaciousness of Mountain, the denser texture of Forest, the movement of River and the openness of Ocean. 

It becomes particularly interesting when several sound samples are played at the same time. Since Koshi developed the four tunings to work harmoniously together within the Earth Symphony Collection, this gives a first impression of how two, three or all four chimes interact as an ensemble. 

The real experience will still be different every time: with an actual chime, the sequence of notes is not determined by a recording – but by movement, air and wind.

An ensemble within its own sound world The Earth Symphony Collection was designed so that Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean can be combined with one another. Two, three or all four chimes can therefore be played together. 

The original 4 Elements Collection with Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis follows a different musical concept and uses an adjusted 432 Hz tuning. 

Koshi therefore recommends combining instruments within their respective collections. Earth Symphony and 4 Elements are not intended to be played together as a single ensemble.
