Koshi Chime Ignis – 4 Elements
Fire Chime – G Major, 8 Sound Rods & Bamboo
Warmth, light and movement.
Ignis is the fire tuning of the Koshi 4 Elements Collection. Eight hand-tuned steel rods form a pentatonic sequence in G major: G – B – D – G – B – D – G – A.
Of the four tunings, Ignis has the liveliest and most luminous character. The recurring G gives the sound a clear centre, while B and D complete the G major triad. The additional A opens this harmonic framework and introduces movement.
The result is a sound that feels warm and bright without becoming sharp or restless. This is where the connection with the element of fire becomes meaningful: Ignis does not attempt to imitate flames acoustically. Instead, it translates warmth, light and movement into a musical tuning.
When the chime is moved by hand or played by the wind, the notes appear in a continually changing order. Its underlying character remains intact – lively and mobile, yet harmonically coherent.
Eight sound rods inside a bamboo resonator
The cylindrical resonator made from treated bamboo contains eight steel rods. They are silver-soldered to a metal base and individually tuned by hand in the Koshi workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The tuning uses a 432 Hz reference together with a harmonic correction developed specifically by Koshi. Rather than treating each rod in isolation, they are adjusted in relation to one another so that their notes and overtones work harmoniously within the instrument as a whole.
A hard acrylic sphere serves as the clapper. Even small movements cause different rods to sound. Because Ignis is built around a pentatonic scale, changing and unpredictable sequences remain within a clear musical framework.
Ignis within the 4 Elements Collection
Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis each have their own tuning, but Koshi designed them to be played together within the 4 Elements Collection. Ignis contributes warmth, brightness and a livelier impulse to the combined sound.
The newer Earth Symphony Collection follows a different musical concept and uses a 440 Hz reference tuning. Koshi therefore recommends combining instruments within their respective collections. 4 Elements and Earth Symphony are not intended to be played together as a single ensemble.
Whether indoors, on a sheltered balcony or beneath a covered terrace, Ignis can be played by hand or set in motion by a gentle air current. Outdoors, the chime should be protected from rain, prolonged moisture and strong fluctuations in temperature.
