Koshi Chime Terra – 4 Elements

The deepest voice of the four elements.

Terra is the lowest-pitched of the four tunings in Koshi's classic 4 Elements Collection. Inspired by the element of Earth, it has a warm, grounded character and forms the tonal foundation alongside Aqua, Aria and Ignis. 

Inside the resonating body are eight steel rods tuned to G – C – E – F – G – C – E – G. Together they form a C major harmony and are individually tuned by hand with reference to 432 Hz. Koshi applies its own harmonic correction so that the lower and higher notes respond to one another in a balanced way. 

This arrangement of notes is part of what makes Terra interesting. The eight rods do not form a melody that has to be played in a predetermined sequence. Different movements cause the clapper to reach different rods, continually creating new patterns. The tuning provides the harmonic framework – movement determines the music. 

Yet Terra always retains its distinctive voice. As the lowest tuning in the 4 Elements Collection, its deeper notes are particularly present, while higher harmonics add clarity. The result is the warm, full resonance that gives Terra its individual character within the quartet. 

Bamboo as a resonator 

The cylindrical resonating body is made from treated bamboo. It receives and amplifies the vibrations of the steel rods and contributes significantly to the long, warm resonance characteristic of the classic Koshi chimes. 

The eight steel rods are silver-soldered onto a metal base. At the centre, a clapper with a hard acrylic sphere moves between them. A gentle turning motion allows several rods to sound in succession, while a soft pendulum movement can bring individual notes more clearly into focus. Suspended freely, Terra can also be played by the wind.

Terra, Aqua, Aria & Ignis 

Terra belongs to the Koshi 4 Elements Collection together with Aqua, Aria and Ignis. Each of the four instruments has its own tuning and tonal character. Their tunings have, however, been designed to harmonise within the collection. Terra can therefore be played alone or combined with one, two or all three of the other 4 Elements chimes. As the lowest tuning, it provides a particularly warm foundation when several are played together. 

The newer Earth Symphony Collection follows a different musical concept and uses a 440 Hz reference tuning. Koshi therefore recommends combining instruments within their respective collections. 4 Elements and Earth Symphony are not intended to be played together as a single ensemble.

Handcrafted in France 

Each Koshi Terra is made in the workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The eight steel rods are individually tuned by hand and by ear, and the finished instrument is listened to as a whole and adjusted again when necessary. 

Eight defined notes thus become an instrument whose sequences can continually change – while always retaining its own distinctive voice.

Terra gives the sound a foundation: warm, deep and calm in character.
