Woodstock Adagio Chime – Spanish Garden

The Woodstock Adagio Chime – Spanish Garden is tuned to the opening minor chord of the famous Adagio from Joaquín Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Six silver aluminium tubes translate the musical atmosphere of this work into a wind chime that creates new combinations of tones with every movement of the breeze. 

Composed in 1939, the Concierto de Aranjuez is one of the best-known works by Spanish composer Joaquín Rodrigo. Its slow second movement, the Adagio, became famous far beyond the world of classical music. Rodrigo associated his concerto with the gardens of the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, evoking an atmosphere of magnolias, birdsong and flowing fountains. 

This is where the name Spanish Garden finds its meaning. 

Rather than simply reproducing a melody from the concerto, Woodstock tunes the six tubes to the notes of the opening minor chord of the Adagio. The breeze then decides which tubes sound and in what order their notes meet. 

The result recalls its musical inspiration without attempting to reproduce it: calm, gently melancholic and coloured by the distinctive tension of a minor harmony. 

The design is equally understated. Silver aluminium tubes are combined with ash wood in a warm teak finish. A removable windcatcher responds to moving air and sets the six precisely tuned tubes in motion. 

With an overall length of approximately 84 cm, the Spanish Garden has an elegant presence and is suitable for gardens, patios and protected outdoor areas as well as indoor spaces where moving air can bring its sound to life.
