Koshi Chime Aria – 4 Elements
Air Chime – A Minor, 8 Sound Rods & Bamboo
A sound that leaves room to breathe.
Aria is the air tuning of the Koshi 4 Elements Collection. Eight hand-tuned steel rods form the sequence A – C – E – A – B – C – E – B in A minor.
The arrangement of its notes already gives Aria a different character from Terra or Aqua. Small spaces open between recurring notes, while the higher tones lend the instrument brightness and movement. The result is clear and light without becoming thin, supported by the long resonance characteristic of Koshi chimes.
The name Aria works on more than one level. In Italian, aria means “air”, while in music it also refers to an aria. With Koshi Aria, however, the element of air comes first: movement sets the rods vibrating, notes emerge, overlap and gradually disappear into the surrounding space.
The connection with air is therefore more than an image for the sound – air is also what can play the instrument.
Eight sound rods inside a bamboo resonator
The cylindrical resonator made from treated bamboo contains eight steel rods. They are silver-soldered to a metal base and individually tuned by hand in the Koshi workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees.
The tuning uses a 432 Hz reference together with a harmonic correction developed specifically by Koshi. The individual rods are adjusted so that lower and higher notes and their overtones work harmoniously within the instrument.
A hard acrylic sphere serves as the clapper. When Aria is moved by hand or set in motion by a gentle air current, it continually meets different rods. The order of the notes is therefore never fixed, while the harmonic structure of the instrument remains coherent.
Aria within the 4 Elements Collection
Terra, Aqua, Aria and Ignis each have their own tuning, but Koshi designed them to be played together within the 4 Elements Collection. Aria contributes a particularly bright and open sound character to the ensemble.
The newer Earth Symphony Collection follows a different musical concept and uses a 440 Hz reference tuning. Koshi therefore recommends combining instruments within their respective collections. 4 Elements and Earth Symphony are not intended to be played together as a single ensemble.
Whether indoors, on a sheltered balcony or beneath a covered terrace, Aria can be played by hand or set in motion by a gentle air current. Outdoors, the chime should be protected from rain, prolonged moisture and strong fluctuations in temperature.
