Koshi Chime Forest – Earth Symphony
F-sharp Minor – 12 Sound Rods & Solid Oak
Many voices – and silence in between.
With Forest, Koshi takes its new Earth Symphony collection deep into the woods. Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean represent four great natural landscapes and four distinctive worlds of sound, designed to be played individually or together.
Forest is inspired by the particular atmosphere of great forests: a forest is never completely silent – yet somehow feels quiet. Individual sounds emerge, disappear again and become part of a greater whole. This interplay is reflected in the character of the instrument.
Twelve steel rods inside the resonating body are tuned by hand to an F-sharp minor harmony with a reference tuning of 440 Hz. Four frequencies are doubled with identically tuned rods, acting as additional sympathetic resonators. When a rod is struck, related vibrations can therefore contribute to the sound and extend its resonance.
The result is a denser sonic texture with remarkable depth. Individual notes emerge from the resonance while others seem to continue vibrating in the background. Compared with the broad openness of Mountain, Forest feels more layered, enveloping and introspective.
The material itself is part of the instrument's identity. Its resonating body is made from solid oak wood. The natural wood receives and amplifies the vibrations of the twelve rods, providing Forest with its warm resonating space. Brass and coconut shell are used for the clapper assembly, while the Earth Symphony Collection contains no plastic.
Like all Koshi chimes, Forest is handcrafted in the workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The twelve steel rods are silver-soldered onto a metal base and then individually tuned by ear. Achieving the correct pitch is only part of the process: it is the interplay of fundamental notes, resonance and overtones that ultimately gives each instrument its voice.
Forest can simply be suspended and played by the breeze or deliberately set in motion by hand. A gentle turning movement creates a succession of notes, while a soft pendulum motion can bring individual tones more clearly into focus.
Forest can also be played together with Mountain, River and Ocean. Koshi designed the four Earth Symphony tunings so that each retains its distinctive character while remaining harmonically coherent within the ensemble.
A chime that does not attempt to imitate the forest, but translates something of its particular experience into sound: many voices, deep resonance – and space for silence.
