Koshi Chime River – Earth Symphony
G-sharp Minor – 12 Sound Rods & Solid Cherry
Always in motion – never quite the same sound twice.
With River, the Koshi Earth Symphony collection follows the movement of water. Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean represent four great natural landscapes – and four distinctive worlds of sound that can be experienced individually or combined with one another.
A river has no fixed rhythm. Water accelerates, becomes calm, flows around obstacles and continually finds a new path. River translates this idea into music: the focus is not on a single note, but on the movement from one sound to the next.
Twelve steel rods inside the resonating body are tuned by hand to a G-sharp minor harmony with a reference tuning of 440 Hz. Four frequencies are doubled with identically tuned rods, acting as additional sympathetic resonators. When a rod is struck by the clapper, related vibrations can contribute to the sound and extend its resonance.
This gives River its fluid, layered character. Individual notes emerge, flow into one another and gradually disappear into the resonance. A gentle movement creates quiet sequences of notes, while a broader movement sets more rods into vibration and produces a small cascade of sound.
Reflecting this character, the resonating body is made from solid cherry wood. The wood receives the vibrations of the twelve rods and amplifies their warm, clear resonance. Brass and coconut shell are used for the clapper assembly and, like the entire Earth Symphony Collection, River contains no plastic.
Each Koshi River is handcrafted in the workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees. The twelve steel rods are silver-soldered onto a metal base and then individually tuned by ear. Precise pitch is only part of the process; equally important is the way the notes, resonances and overtones work together.
River can simply be suspended and played by the breeze or deliberately set in motion by hand. A gentle turning movement creates a flowing succession of different notes, while a soft pendulum motion can bring individual tones more clearly into focus.
River can also be played together with Mountain, Forest and Ocean. The four Earth Symphony tunings are designed so that each instrument retains its individual voice while becoming part of a broader harmonic soundscape.
River does not attempt to imitate the sound of flowing water. Instead, it translates one of the river's essential qualities into music: everything is in motion – and every movement creates something new.
