Koshi Chime Ocean – Earth Symphony
Pentatonic B Major – 12 Sound Rods & Solid Maple
An open space of sound without a fixed horizon.
With Ocean, the Koshi Earth Symphony collection reaches the sea. Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean represent four great natural landscapes – and four different ways of translating space and movement into sound.
For Ocean, the defining quality is openness.
Twelve steel rods inside the resonating body are tuned by hand to a pentatonic B major harmony with a reference tuning of 440 Hz. As with the other Earth Symphony instruments, four frequencies are doubled. These identically tuned rods act as additional sympathetic resonators, allowing related vibrations to linger within the instrument.
The pentatonic tuning gives Ocean its distinctive musical character. Working with five different scale degrees leaves plenty of space between the notes. Different combinations can flow freely into one another without requiring the wind to follow a predetermined melody.
This corresponds beautifully with the experience of the sea: individual sounds appear like movements across a vast surface, overlap and disappear again – always leaving a sense of space beyond them.
Ocean does not sound like the sea, nor does it attempt to imitate waves. The connection lies deeper: movement takes place within a broad, open space.
The resonating body of solid maple wood complements the clear and balanced character of the instrument. Twelve steel rods are silver-soldered onto a metal base, while brass and coconut shell are used for the clapper assembly. Like the entire Earth Symphony Collection, Ocean contains no plastic.
Each instrument is handcrafted in Koshi's workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees and individually tuned by ear. Precise frequency alone does not determine the finished sound. Fundamental notes, resonances and overtones must come together as a coherent harmonic whole.
Ocean can be played naturally by the breeze or deliberately set in motion by hand. A gentle turning movement creates a succession of different tones, while a soft pendulum motion can bring individual notes more clearly into focus.
Together with Mountain, Forest and River, Ocean completes the Earth Symphony. The four distinctive tunings are designed to retain their individual personalities while remaining harmonically compatible with one another.
Mountain opens up space. Forest gives sound density. River sets it in motion.
Ocean sets it free.
