Koshi Chime Mountain – Earth Symphony
E Major – 12 Sound Rods & Solid Walnut
Space, stillness and a sound that lingers.
With Mountain, Koshi introduces its new Earth Symphony collection – four sonic landscapes inspired by great presences of the natural world: Mountain, Forest, River and Ocean.
Mountain evokes the experience of the mountains: a sense of space and height, but also stillness, stability and presence. Koshi translates this inspiration not simply into a name, but into a distinctive musical architecture.
Twelve steel rods inside the resonating body are tuned by hand to an E major harmony with a reference tuning of 440 Hz. Four of the rods are doubled at identical frequencies, acting as additional sympathetic resonators. When individual rods are struck by the clapper, related vibrations can therefore contribute to the sound, adding depth and allowing the resonance to linger.
This gives Mountain its distinctive character: notes emerge, respond to one another and slowly fade away. The resonance feels broad and grounded – reflecting the landscape that inspired its name.
Earth Symphony also represents a new approach to the construction of a Koshi chime. While the original 4 Elements Collection uses a bamboo resonator and eight sound rods, Mountain features twelve rods and a resonating body made from solid walnut wood. A thin matt varnish protects the wood, while brass and coconut shell are used for the clapper assembly. The instrument contains no plastic.
Like all Koshi chimes, Mountain is handcrafted in the workshop at the foot of the French Pyrenees and tuned individually by ear. Precise frequencies are only part of the process: the instrument is complete when its individual notes and overtones work together as a coherent harmonic whole.
Mountain can be played on its own or together with Forest, River and Ocean. Koshi designed all four Earth Symphony tunings to remain harmonically coherent when combined, allowing the instruments to respond freely to one another.
A Koshi chime with greater depth and resonance – and a beautiful evolution of the idea that has defined Koshi for decades: from a few simple movements comes a melody that is never exactly the same twice.
