Jaw Harp Dan Moi Standard
Bamboo & Brass, Vietnam
This lip jaw harp is traditionally handcrafted from brass in northern Vietnam. A thread connects it to a bamboo case, which is wrapped in colorful fabrics—each case is unique. Vietnamese jaw harps are characterized by their easy playability, beautiful, overtone-rich sound, and affordable price.
The Dan Moi can be played slowly and meditatively or fast and dynamically. Its sound is reminiscent of the electronic sounds of analog synthesizers – completely without technology.
Among the H'mong tribe in northern Vietnam, the Dan Moi is played by both women and men at festivals, for relaxation, and for courtship. Stories can be told and emotions set to music with its melodies. Lovers use the Dan Moi to make first contact, reveal their feelings, introduce themselves and their families, "speak" of their longings, and tease each other in long musical dialogues. This reveals a fascinating sound spectrum for such a small instrument.

What to do if your Dan Moi rattles?
Dan Moi jaw harps are very delicately handcrafted. The gap between the frame and the tongue is razor-thin. Therefore, it sometimes happens that a Dan Moi rattles. This can be caused by a burr or splinter from manufacturing, temperature fluctuations, or bending. This can usually be easily fixed yourself by carefully cutting along the gap between the frame and the tongue on the back with the sharp blade of a utility knife.
