Shiitake grows wild on dead oaks, chestnut and beech trees and has been cultivated for 1000 years and is still exported to more than 40 countries to this day. In Germany, it has only recently become popularized over the last 30 years but it is a quickly growing phenomenon as shiitake cultivation increases. The shiitake stimulates the vital functions of the body and reinfoces the body's natural defence mechanisms. Shiitake boasts high levels of calcium, potassium and zinc – important elements for the proper functioning of the immune system. The mushroom also contains B vitamins, vitamin C, and vitamin D or its precursor, ergosterol.
